FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about stump grinding and removal
Why should I have a stump removed?
Tree stumps are more than an eyesore. They attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring pests. Stumps can also harbor fungal diseases that spread to healthy trees nearby. They create tripping hazards, make mowing difficult, and can decrease your property value. Removing a stump reclaims usable yard space and eliminates these risks.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding uses a commercial-grade machine to chip the stump down to 6–8 inches below ground level. It is faster, less invasive, and more affordable. Stump removal involves extracting the entire stump and root ball with an excavator, leaving a larger hole that needs to be backfilled. We offer both services depending on your needs — grinding is ideal for most residential jobs, while full removal is better for construction prep or severe root issues.
Will stump grinding remove all the roots?
Stump grinding removes the stump and the main root structure down to about 6–8 inches below grade. The remaining roots left in the soil will naturally decay over time. If you need complete root removal — for example, before pouring a foundation or installing a patio — we offer full stump removal with our mini excavator.
What happens to the wood chips and shavings?
Grinding produces a mound of wood shavings. We rake them over the hole and surrounding area — they make excellent natural mulch for flower beds and gardens. If you prefer, we can haul the shavings away for an additional cost.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most residential stumps take 15 minutes to an hour. Larger stumps or multiple stumps may take longer. Most jobs are completed in a single visit.
Can I grind a stump myself?
Rental stump grinders are available, but they are significantly less powerful than commercial equipment and can be dangerous without experience. Professional grinding is faster, goes deeper, and comes with insurance coverage. We recommend leaving it to the pros for safety and a cleaner result.
What about underground utilities and sprinkler lines?
We always call Blue Stakes (811) to mark underground utility lines before every job — safety first. Sprinkler and irrigation lines often run through stump areas and may need to be cut. As licensed landscape contractors, we can relay your sprinkler system and professionally repair any lines affected during the job.
How do I measure my stump for a quote?
Measure the diameter across the widest part of the stump at ground level — from root flare to root flare, or "dirt to dirt." Include any humped-up ground around the base. Text us a photo along with the measurement at 801-300-5366 for a quick estimate. Not sure? We can measure on-site for free.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Every stump is different — cost depends on the diameter, location, access, and number of stumps. We provide free estimates with no hidden fees. Call or text 801-300-5366 for a quick quote.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes! We proudly offer a 10% discount for first responders and seniors. Just mention the discount when requesting your free estimate.
What areas do you serve?
We serve from Spanish Fork to Park City and Tooele County, including Provo, Orem, American Fork, Lehi, Sandy, Draper, Murray, Salt Lake City, Tooele City, Grantsville, and all cities in between. Not sure if we cover your area? Give us a call.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
After grinding, you can plant grass seed or lay sod in the area right away. For planting a new tree in the same spot, we recommend waiting until the remaining roots have had time to decompose — typically a year or more. Planting nearby (a few feet away) is usually fine immediately.
